Some more interesting attractions of Budapest


Libegő is a chairlift that connects Zugliget and János-hegy. It is a very popular excursion destination among the locals, especially when the weather is nice. The construction started in 1970, and after completion the name was chosen in an open competition. It can be reached by bus nr. 291 leaving from Nyugati tér or by car on Zugligeti út.
The chairlift slowly goes uphill above gardens, old villas and woodland. You have time to admire the beautiful panorama. The chairs are moving continuously but slowly (4 km/h), so getting in and out cannot be a problem to anyone, however help is always around.

Libegő BudapestThe hill station is at 488 meters height. From there you can walk on marked footpaths to Normafa. With a 5 minutes walk uphill you can visit the Elisabeth look-out tower on top of János-hegy. It is an excellent program for a sunny weekend, when you can get to know the green part of Budapest and see the city from a bird’s eye perspective.

Sas-hegy visitor center and nature trail

Did you know that in the heart of the Budapest, among residential buildings the last remnants of the special flora and fauna of the Buda hills can be found? Sas-hegy is a protected area that was amongst the first in the country to gain environmental protection in 1958. From a distance it seems to be a bare, rocky place but if you look closer you can discover the unique flora and fauna. There is of course professional help to discover this special world. A visitor center with an interactive exhibiton, a nature trail with guided walks and a look-out point with nice panorama of the city await the visitors. The nature trail is 850 meters long, an easy walk that can be visited with a guide only.

Sas-hegy nature trailThe tour takes roughly an hour, you can hear interesting stories about the area and meet the inhabitants: different kind of plants, flowers, rare birds and insects. The visitor center is open from 1st March to 31st October on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 17.00. It can be reached by bus nr. 8 from Kálvin square to Korompai utca or by tram nr. 59 from Moszkva tér to Farkasréti temető. Address: 1112 Budapest, Tájék u. 26.

Urania observatory

Have you ever wanted to see the Moon, the Jupiter or the rings of Saturn? Now you have a chance if you visit the observatory on the Gellért hill. The program is rather dependant on the weather and the location of the planets, but in case of clear sky on Monday and Wednesday evenings everyone can take part. A 1 hour long explanation about the stars, planets and other wonders of the sky – what can be more exciting?

observatoryEspecially when the telescope is a 90 year old museum piece, that once belonged to the famous Hungarian polyhistor Miklós Konkoly Thege. The building is an old villa, that was ruined in the second world war. After the renovation a removable top and a look-out terrace was built to serve the amateur astronomers. Address: 1016 Sánc u. 3/b Access by bus nr. 8, 112, 78 or 27 stops: Czakó or Sánc utca

National Bank visitor center

Not interested in money – read no further. In the visitor center of the Hungarian National Bank frst of all you can see interesting exhibitions, use interactive games, listen to professional presentations or issue coins. If old coins, the history of Hungarian money or interesting facts from everyday life are yet another boring museum experience for you, try the interactive games. You have a chance to print a banknote with your own portrait, check your banknotes with UV light and check your weight in gold or coins. Furthermore you can even test your strength with real gold bars!

Visitor center at National BankThe Visitor Centre is open between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day of the week, and is free of charge. Guided tours are available three times a week (in English and German as well): Tuesdays & Fridays at 2 p.m. Wednesdays at 12 noon Address: 1054 Szabadság tér 8–9.
